Ashiamma: The Backbone of Kalam’s Family Ashiamma, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s mother, was a remarkable woman despite her lack of formal education. As the matriarch of a large, middle-class family in Rameswaram, she exemplified resilience and resourcefulness. Food was often rationed, as her husband worked in a modest boat business. Yet, Ashiamma ensured every family member and guest was fed, embodying the Indian tradition of Atithi Devo Bhava (Guests are like God). Her joy in serving others was rooted in her devotion to God and her belief in family unity.
One anecdote from Kalam’s childhood vividly illustrates her empathy. Once, noticing young Kalam’s insatiable appetite, she quietly made more chapattis, understanding his hunger without him needing to say a word. On another occasion, when a tired Kalam sought comfort in her lap, her silent understanding of his emotions brought him solace.
